Marion County Commissioners approved a resolution, submitted by County Judge Leward LaFleur, in today’s meeting which requests Texas Governor Greg Abbott use this authority to freeze property tax valuations at the January 1, 2019, levels.
The resolution has no binding authority, but is merely a request.
Commissioner Charlie Treadwell, while supporting the resolution, expressed concern over the resolution as he hopes the other taxing entities, and tax supported budget entities, in the county will pass a similar resolution.
“If Marion County is the only taxing entity that does it,” said Treadwell, “then I don’t know how much relief this is going to pass on to people. because a large percentage of our county taxes is frozen because their over 65, and we’ll have to get all the elected officials to agree to not increase their budgets.”
The Commissioners approved the resolution.
Other items on the agenda passed with little discussion.
