Marion County Democrats are in need of a new Party Chair after the resignation of Ricky Harrington late last month. Harrington has been the party chair for the last 16-years.

“I’ve had it for so long and I’m looking for something else to do,” said Harrington. “I’m thinking about what I may do and if I decide not to do that, then I’ll probably be back on the ballot in March. This gives me time to decide and possibly run an exploratory committee and then some fundraising if I decide to do what I’m thinking about doing.”

Harrington said the Executive Committee for the Marion County Democratic Party appointed Tom Davis as the interim party chair.

“[Davis] was the only person willing to take it,” Harrington said. “He’s not interested in keeping it and can’t run for it. The committee has told him not to go out there and do anything about it.”

Harrington said he’s been trying to give up the seat for years but has been unable to find anyone interested in taking over.

“It was laid in my lap back when I was president of School Board back in 2005,” he said. “I’ve had it for the last 16 years and have been trying to find someone for the last six years. I’d like to lay it in their lap the way it was laid in mine.”

Harrington and the Executive Committee only notified the State and Regional Party offices about the resignation. “The Executive Committee and the State didn’t think we needed to tell anyone about it,” Harrington said. “These little county party chairs they don’t do anything about it so we just didn’t think it was newsworthy.”

If anyone is interested in seeking the position, they should contact Harrington at 903-431-8161.
