The Marion County Democratic Party approved the appointment of a new party chair last week.
Jefferson resident Maurice Jones has been named to the post that was vacated earlier this month by longtime party chair Rickey Harrington.
“The opportunity to serve the community has always been a passion of mine and when this position as the Marion County Democratic Chair was presented to me, I was compelled, as well a,s honored for the opportunity to serve the citizens of this county,” Jones said.
He is a native Jeffersonian.
“I attended head start to high school and graduated in 1988,” said. “I served 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. I am a graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) with a bachelor’s degree in Health Care Management.”
Jones currently works as a substitute teacher for the Jefferson Independent School District and as a University Interscholastic League (UIL) sport official.
He serves as a board member for the Marion County Hospital District (MCHD) Indigent Health Care Program (IHCP) for Marion County.
About the future of the party, Jones said, “I have always been a firm believer in collaboration and transparency. If we are able to communicate and discuss plans and ideas openly and honestly, then the sky is the limit to what people can accomplish. My goal/purpose would be to bring awareness of the laws and regulations that governs our democracy and the rights/privileges of every citizen of this county to exercise those rights/privileges.”
