In general, everyone will agree that increasing taxes, of any type, is a bad idea.
But, on the November 2 ballot, the creation of the Marion County Assistance District needs to be overwhelmingly approved.
The district will add a 1.5% Sales and Use tax to purchases made in the county. It does not, however, increase sales tax on purchases made inside the Jefferson city limits.
So why is this a good idea?
Commissioners have long faced the problem of having enough funding to start making a dent in the necessary road and bridge repairs around the county. It’s the number one complaint from residents.
To try and start solving the road problem, Commissioners have agreed, in writing, to use 80% of the Assistance District funds for road repairs. The remaining 20% will go to supporting law enforcement in the county.
And to be perfectly clear, roads inside the City of Jefferson will not benefit from these funds. It’s all to be used out in the County.
Commissioners have said the bulk of the funds raised will be paid by visitors to the lakes, so while residents will see some increase in the cost of items, the majority of the tax will be paid by those visiting our county.
Currently there’s a 6% sales tax out in the county. The State receives 100% of those funds. If approved, the new total sales tax rate would 7.5%.
The alternative, if the Assistance District is not created, is to raise the Road and Bridge Property Tax and that increase could be as high as 5 cents per $100 in valuation and take more out of your pocketbook. And no one wants that.
This is important for Marion County.
Go vote either in early voting or on Tuesday, November 2.
Vote YES to creating the Marion County Assistance District.
