Trash time change set for January 1

“The times they are a changing” to dispose of solid waste in Precinct 3 starting January 1.

Marion County Commissioners approved the hours of operation of the solid waste dump at Precinct 3 during Monday’s regular meeting.

The new hours only affect Precinct 3 Saturday operating hours. The new hours will be noon to 4 p.m. starting January 1.

Marion County District Attorney Angela Smoak requested Commissioners approve withdrawing the County’s participation in the Regional Public Defender for Capital Cases Interlocal Agreement. Smoak indicated “this contract is not as cost efficient as we once thought.” Per her discussions with other attorneys at a seminar this year, the recommendation was made to “not renew the agreement.” The withdrawal will save the County $3,549.

Sheriff David Capps requested Commissioners approve a resolution allowing him to participate in the Body Worn Camera Program for 2022.

The program is a 75/25 matching grant which accompanies a five year package from Watch Guard. The grant only covers the first year of the program and would cost the county $6,434.50 in 2023. Afterwards, the cost is $9,792 annually for equipment plus $6,930 for cloud services. Capps said the equipment is 6 years old and is no longer compatible with cloud services. New equipment, individually purchased, would be a greater expense to the county than the program.

Commissioners also approved Capps’ request to amend the budget by $3,625.95 to participate in a Bulletproof Vest program. Capps indicated the current vests are also 6 years old and the program reduces the costs for the department.

Lastly, Commissioners agreed to approve the completion of the final punch list on the Courthouse Restoration project. Marion County Judge Leward LaFleur said there are some additional items still being worked on, but they are not on this particular list.
