Pct. 2 JP, Constable offices to stay put

Staff Reports

The Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace and Constable will not be moving to new offices at the Smithland Volunteer Fire Department building as Commissioners tabled the request from Pct 2 JP Alan Biddy.

Biddy made the request last week via email to move the offices to the west side of the building where Precinct 2 votes. The building is located directly behind the VFD. The VFD meets on the east side of the building and is where voting occurs. The west side was previously used  by a local sewing group which no longer uses the space.

The building at the VFD is owned by JISD.

The current building also houses the office of County Commissioner Ralph Meisenhemer.

Newly appointed Elections Officer for Marion County, Karen Jones, got pending approval to create a contract for election services with JISD. At the time of the meeting, Jones still had to receive approval from JISD on Tuesday. Jones made a similar agreement with the City of Jefferson. Jones will oversee the Uniform May Election as established by Texas Governor Gregg Abbott. The agreement allows the three entities, City, JISD, and County, to share expenses, and thus save money with the election. Each entity will spend around $6,600 instead of the $10-12,000 they normally incur. The agreement will also allow registered voters to cast their ballot at any county polling location instead of specific ones for City, School and County.

Jones also said she’d received full bids for previously struck off property and received the OK from Commissioners to transfer the deed and put the property back on the tax rolls.

The properties include:

• Parcel 5452 1 Ac in the SR Miller survey received from Dustin Bond

•  Parcel 15847, Pine Harbor Sec H Lot 578 from Jesse and Leia Oller

• Parcel 9109 in Shady Shores Hill Crest Section, Lots 194-195 from Emilee Smith Taylor

• Parcel 9599-9602 and 9607 Shady Shores Hill Side Section Lots 98-102 and 110 from James Smith

Commissioners engaged Rod L. Abbott, CPA PLLC, to conduct the 2021 fiscal adit.  The cost is expected to be $13,590, plus expenses, for the audit.

Brevard Architecture was formally hired to perform the preliminary design work for the Marion County Jail Renovations and Additions. Brevard presented to Commissioners in December, but, due to the wording on the agenda, Commissioners could hnot approve the contract at the time. The total cost for the preliminary work is $29,950.

Commissioners will meet again on Monday, January 31, 2022.
