Glenn Melancon’s recent op-ed entitled, “Conservatives seek to limit your personal liberties”, seeks to paint Republicans as trying to take away the personal liberties of Americans. Most notably, he takes the tired old path of trying to portray Republicans as racists. However, Melancon fails to even mention the overarching problem with the nomination of Judge Ketjani Brown Jackson.
The nomination itself was and is racist.
In January of this year, President Biden stated the following:
“While I’ve been studying candidates’ backgrounds and writings, I have made no decision except one. The person I will nominate will be someone with extraordinary qualifications, character, experience and integrity. And that person will be the first Black woman ever nominated to the United States Supreme Court.”
Biden, in one statement, made it abundantly clear that race and gender would be the requirements for getting the job. So, Mr. Melancon, what about the liberties of Hispanics, Asians, Pacific Islanders, people of Middle Eastern descent and the like, that includes both genders? As you stated, their story, “is the story of America.” So, why did the President, who has a history of making racist statements, exclude all of them? The words that he stated, coupled with his actions are a complete contradiction.
Dr. Martin Luther King famously stated, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
Judge Brown Jackson was judged on her skin color, and done so by Democrats, not Republicans. To be more clear, all other female judges in America, that were not black, were disqualified from consideration.
Democrats, who have long tried to portray themselves as the gatekeepers of racial equality, chose not to use a level playing field. That decision came from the top office in the land.
A person cannot hold fast to the words of Dr. King, and then look at this nomination process and think that this process was remotely equitable.
If a person does in fact think that this process was o.k., that a white man declared from up on high that skin color and gender are the requirements for a job, in a land where everyone is supposed to have equal opportunity, then that person is delusional at best, and a hypocrite at worst.
When people like Mr. Melancon ignores that this process was racist, it’s because they know it, but chose not to address it.
As for myself, I could care less if the person nominated is black, white, hispanic, male or female, or from Mars (though citizenship would be an issue there).
However, to read a Democrat trying to portray Republicans as racist, when this entire process was racist before we even heard Judge Ketjani Brown Jackson’s name, is utterly ludicrous and all Americans, regardless of race or gender, know this.
