Gravesite Flags

Memorial Day American Flags will be placed on graves at local cemeteries tomorrow. If anyone would like to participate and help place the flags at Oakwood, Mt. Sinai, and Oakwood Memorial, contact Amye Kelsey at 903-240-8153. To volunteer to help place flags at Cedar Gove, contact Gail Irving at 903-665-0938. To reserve flags for other rural cemeteries in Marion County, contact Paulette Cooper at 903-624-744 or Debbie Brown at 817-727-1770. Pre-reserved flags can be picked up at the VFW building on US-59.

Trinity Cemetery Meeting

The Annual Trinity Cemetery meeting will be Saturday, May 28th, 2022 at Trinity Church.

Jefferson chapters of the VFW and the American Legion will hold their annual Memorial Day Services at 11 a.m. May 30, at Oakwood Cemetery.

Balloon Glow

Marion County Chamber of Commerce will hold their 2nd Annual Balloon Glow on June 4 at the Cypress River Airport. The late afternoon event will feature vendors, food trucks, games, tethered hot air balloon rides, and the glow itself. There will also be a hot air balloon in town on June 3. Kid’s Fish Day

The 23rd Annual Kid’s Fish Day starts at 8a June 4th at Hurricane Creek Recreational Area. Registration begins at 8:00 am, and after bank fishing for three hours, from 9:00 until Noon, the kids proudly bring in their big catches of Bass, Bluegill, Red Ear, Stripers, Catfish, yes, even turtles, some weighing less than the digital scales can register but are logged in regardless. Trophies will be awarded to five different age groups for the most substantial total weight of a stringer, but the real cash prizes go to the top three biggest fish.

Tackle, live bait, snacks, drinks, and hotdogs are all furnished totally free to all participants and their accompanying adults. Also, A FREE GIFT is given to each of the first 300 kids to register! Licenses are not required to fish on June 4.

Miss East Texas Pageant

The 2022 Miss East Texas Pageant, “The ‘Toni’ Awards, will be held at 6p.m. June 4, at the Jefferson High School Commons. Pageant fee is $60 and is open to surrounding areas, we will have pageant forms at the schools no later then next Wednesday and you can also message me to receive one via email. Pageant deadline is May 15th to enter. To register for the Miss East Texas Scholarship Pageant, contact Stardom Williams at 903-917-6023.

Author Event

Jody Hadlock will be returning to Jefferson at 6:30p June 9 at the Jefferson Carnegie Library to promote her new book “The Lives of Diamond Bessie.” Hadlock is a former television news reporter in Texas and South Carolina. This is a free event and refreshments will be served.

JLEP-JAAC Event

JLEP/JAAC are excited to host the 2nd Jefferson Community Law Enforcement Partnership event from 4-7p from June 11th at the Jefferson Community Center. This is also a resource fair to help familiarize citizens with many services available in the city and county.  Last year, they had several school conflicts, so we changed to this date so more folks can attend. Please bring a table, chairs, canopy pop up, and your organization’s information. Please contact Peggy Walker for more information, 903-926-1960.

Juneteenth Celebration

FRESH and Friends will hold their annual Juneteenth Celebration starting at 3p June 18 at the Jefferson Community Center. Preceding the activities will be a parade down MLK. They are still looking for additional horse riders, trail ride groups, churches, atv riders, bikers, social groups, car clubs, businesses, beauty queens, sororities, fraternities, and etc. to participate. O-Line Training

ETPA Encore

East Texas Performing Arts will perform “The Diary of Anne Frank” July 1-3 at Memorial City Hall Performance Center in Marshall. Tickets are available at https://py.pl/Z4s0O
