Texas Tech Ribbon Cutting

Texas Tech’s Professional Development & Academic Advising office in Jefferson will hold a Ribbon Cutting and Open House from 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jeffersonian Institute, 120 E. Austin Street. The primary focus of the site is to bring more professional development opportunities to the community both in person and online.

Christmas in July

Save the Date July 16,2022 Saturday, Christmas in July will be sponsored by the Mims VFD Ladies auxiliary. The event will include household items for sale,  Best Pie Contest, whole pies for sale, also there will be pie and ice cream to eat. This event will be held at the Mims community center 12728 FM 729, North side of Lake O the Pines from 10 Am to 3PM.  This event is planned for the community and all those wishing to submit  a pie for the Best Pie Contest need to deliver it by 11 am the morning of July16.  Pie judging takes place at 12 noon promptly. A gift card will be given to the winner. Pie or fruit cobbler, ice cream and coffee will be available to enjoy for a small donation after the judging takes place. 

 All proceeds will go to help the Mims VFD and EMS service.

Substitute Training

JISD will hold Substitute Training for new substitutes from 9-noon on July 26 at the JISD Administration building. Returning Substitute training will be from 1-2:30p. Those interested should contact Lynn Phillips or Barbara Cox at the Administration building at 903-665-2461 for more information and to get the application packet prior to the training. 

Meet the Teacher

JISD will hold Meet the Teacher on August 4. The Primary School will be from 4:30-6p; Elementary from 4-5:30p; Junior High from 5-6:30p; and the High School is to be determined. 

Master Naturalists Training Class

The Cypress Basin Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists is beginning a new training class August 19th, 2022.  The required 40 hours of training is spread over 4 months, one weekend a month (Friday 6-9pm and Saturday 9-5).  Most classes will be held at the Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Karnack.  Cost is $40 for an individual or $55 for a couple.  Being a Master Naturalist includes volunteering to provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and areas in East Texas.  For more information, send inquiries to Caroline Hughes at cahughes8@gmail.com.  Deadline to register is August 1.

Boxing Classes

Leila Jackson is putting together boxing classes for young boys and girls. For more information contact her on FaceBook. There is also opportunity for adult classes if enough interest is obtained. Classes for children will be $60 and that covers a 6 week course. Gloves are provided.

New Business

Ashley Bell has opened Bulldog Clips at 201 W. Broadway. Walk-ins are welcome and she offers Extensions, Men and Women’s Cuts, Color, Perms, Relaxers. Chemicals are by appointment only. Call or text her at 903-601-3059. 

MCY Football Workouts

Marion County Youth Football workouts will be from 6-7:30p every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, May 30-June 30, at the Bulldog Practice Field at the High School. Signups to play will also be available. Team coaches need to attend. Tramane Nelson also says even if you don’t want to play, but want to work out, as long as attending school, you are welcome to attend.

Summer Reading

The Jefferson Carnegie Library will start their Summer Reading Program from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday June 8 and continuing each Wednesday through July 27. Children ages Pre-K through 5th grade are invited to attend this free weekly event.

ETPA Encore

East Texas Performing Arts will perform “The Diary of Anne Frank” July 1-3 at Memorial City Hall Performance Center in Marshall. Tickets are available at https://py.pl/Z4s0O
