Marion County Commissioners assign inidigent defense contracts

Those needing criminal legal assistance but are unable to afford an attorney will have two options next year for defense attorneys as the Marion County Commissioners approved two Indigent Attorneys during their regular meeting on Monday.

Timothy Cariker will continue into next year and will be joined by Craig Fletcher as the County’s Indigent Defense Attorneys after the two men agreed to split the duties and the County stipend. Both attorneys have offices in Marshall. No attorney residing in Marion County submitted an application for the positions.

Both Cariker and Fletcher will receive $3,333.33 per month starting in January for a total of $40,000 for their services. According to the contract, they can each handle up to 242 cases per year under the agreement.

In other business, Commissioners approved the Regional Evaluation Services for Juveniles Grant from East Texas Council of Governments for $1,000. The annual grant has been received by the County the last several years.

Commissioners will meet again at 9 a.m. Dec.12 in the Commissioners Courtroom in the Courthouse annex on Austin Street.
