Having to Stop at 10 new stop signs across the city is delayed as Major Rob Baker cancelled Tuesday night’s Council meeting. The new signs were set to be proposed by JPD Chief Tino Perez.

The signs will be on the January agenda.

“We’ve been working with the streets department and residents to identify streets which need additional traffic control devices,” Perez said.  “This is just the first set of signs we’re recommending.”

The intersections are all located in or near the historic district but include a number of heavily trafficked streets around Lion’s Park.

All of the intersections currently do not have any traffic control devices, and some could be considered “limited field of view” corners or are hard to tell if there is any oncoming traffic.

The intersections include:

-Stop signs at W. Dallas and N. Jackson streets. There is limited field of view due to fencing and high retaining walls. Traffic on N. Jackson will have the right-of-way

-Stop sign at W. Dallas and S. Rusk streets. This is a “T-Intersection” and S. Rusk will have the right-of-way

-Yield Signs at W. Lake and S. Rusk streets. This is a clear intersection but traffic should be slowed for safety. Right-of-way will be given to traffic on W. Lake street

-Stop Sign at S. Bridge and E. Benners streets. This is a “T-intersection” that offers low visibility to E. Benners and the intersection. E. Benners will have the right-of-way

-Stop Sign at S. Bridge and E. Moseley. This is a four-way intersection. This adds a stop sign for northbound traffic on S. Bridge. E. Moseley will have the right-of-way

-Stop Sign at E. Locust and S. Main streets. This is next to Christ Episcopal Church and is a “T-intersection” with heavy traffic along the west side of Lions Park. S. Main will have the right-of-way

-Stop Sign at E. Bohnam and N. Soda streets. This is a “T-intersection” and N. Soda Street will have the right-of-way

-Stop Sign at E. Baker and S. Line streets. This is a “T-intersection” and the field of view is limited and narrow when traveling on E. Baker. S. Line street will have the right-of-way

-Stop Sign at N. Market and S. Line streets. This is a “T-intersection;” is at the end of N. Market; and has limited visibility. S. Line will have the right-of-way

-Stop Sign at W. Orleans and N. Market streets. This isa. “T-intersection” and is the end of W. Orleans. N. Market will have the right-of-way

“Once the signs are installed, we’ll offer a ‘grace period’ so residents can get used to the new stops,” Perez said.
