As the new year begins, so does the tenure of Michael Walker, Jefferson Independent School District’s new superintendent. On Jan. 1, the district’s former assistant superintendent will replace Rob Barnwell, who retired in December after 9 years as JISD’s superintendent and 34 total years in education.
Walker said he is honored to be selected to lead the district and work with the school board, staff, community and other partners to grow every student every day.
“Our school board is reflective of both our student population and greater community,” Walker said. “They provide broad representation for our community, great diversity of thought, life experience, and perspective that will be valuable as we continue to advance the district. Our members are genuinely committed to providing the best for our students.”
He has been with the district for nine years, also serving as principal at Jefferson High School.
“During this time and through my own experiences here, there are some facts to which I can attest,” Walker said. “We have great kids in our district. We have a knowledgeable and professional staff that is dedicated to providing the tools and opportunities the kids need to own their tomorrows. In our community, people care. We have an exceptionally high number of community members that serve and lead in the interest of others. Not every school district or community has these attributes. We are fortunate.”
He added that he believes that JISD is headed in a positive direction and that continual assessments are being done to assure students’ needs are being met. These include 12 career pathways, plus Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, arts and humanities, along with multi-disciplinary pathways. Fifty-six dual credits are offered, as an associate’s degree plan.
Walker outlined his immediate priorities he is looking forward to working on with the school board. These include:
• Continuing to make decisions driven by what is in the best interest of the students;
• Continuing to provide a safe environment for students to learn and grow while adding additional layers of protection;
• Ensuring JISD is fiscally responsible and staffed in a way that reflects student needs;
• Developing solutions for retaining, attracting, and recruiting quality staff;
• Expanding academic expectations, student growth, and student achievement;
• Strengthening the school and community relationship.
The new superintendent is currently in his 24th year in education and his 16th year in administration. He said that over the years in education, he has had many experiences which have allowed him to see and feel situations from many different perspectives. w
“Just when you think you have experienced everything possible under the sun, something comes along to make you realize you haven’t,” Walker explained. “I have taught at all levels, coached, and driven my own bus route…
This helps in developing productive lasting relationships and solving complex problems.”
On a personal level, he said that he is very service and family oriented and enjoys helping others.
“I believe in and understand the importance of education, and more importantly, teaching kids to love learning,” Walker said. “I believe in team and I am very competitive. I strive to never let common sense leave the equation. I enjoy taking on problems/challenges and finding solutions.”
