Readers may notice a big difference in this week’s Jimplecute.
Readers may not be happy about it. Jimplecute publishers are not thrilled either.
But, as newspapers evolve, and the costs of equipment, staffing, and paper continue to increase, newspapers are seeing a lot of changes.
The Jimplecute has held on to a larger paper size.
“Neither Austin nor I really like the narrower paper,” said co-publisher Hugh Lewis. “But, we’ve held on as long as we can. The press closure forced us to have to decide either to significantly increase advertising and circulation rates, or to go to narrower paper.”
According to Lewis, the Jimplecute was looking at an almost doubling in costs to keep the wider paper.
“We’re a small town paper, and we know our readers and advertisers, and know the market here would not absorb such an increase,” said Lewis.
The overall size of the paper is about one column narrower.
“The number of pages we print each week may increase due to the change, and the type of paper now being used is heavier, so, other than page size, the Jimplecute feels more like a paper we grew up with,” said co-publisher Austin Lewter.
“The Jimplecute is dedicated to continuing to provide news and information on Marion County to our readers and community,” Lewter continued. “We’re like family here, and sometimes families have to make choices that are not enjoyed by everyone, but are for the better of the family.”
Advertising deadlines will continue to be 5p Tuesday, and articles will move to 10a.m. Wednesday. The Jimplecute will continue to be distributed on Friday’s.
