In a motion revisited from last month, the Jefferson ISD Board of Trustees, Tuesday night, approved the 2023-2024 school calendar.

The calendar was first presented last month but tabled when superintendent Mike Walker realized the Easter break was slated for the wrong weekend.

“We double checked everything and this version is correct,” Walker said.

As presented, students will start school on August 14. School holidays will include:

-Labor Day, September 4.

-Columbus Day, October 9.

-Student Fall Break, October 16-17.

-Thanksgiving Break, November 20-24.

-Winter Break, December 18- January 3.

-MLK Day, January 15.

-Spring Break, March 11-15

-Easter Break, March 29-April 1.

-Memorial Day, May 27.

There will be early release days on November 17, December 15, March 8, and May 23.

The last day of class will be Thursday, May 23 and High School Graduation will be May 24, 2024.

The board also tidied up a local policy that affects the employment of 10 district employee leaders.

Currently, JISD’s chief financial officer, chief of police, child nutrition director, human resources director, PEIMS director, technology director and transportation and maintenance director are all at-will employees. As such, they are not bound to an employment contract.

“It will be in our best interest and the best interest of these employees for them to be under contract,” Walker said.

The board agreed unanimously and made the change.

In other business, the board:

-Approved technology upgrades that, after local grant money, will cost the district approximately $10,000.

-Approved the 23-24 Budget Calendar.

-Received a preliminary summation of the annual TAPR report from Dr. Lynn Phillips, JISD Director of Curriculum and Instruction.

After an executive session that lasted almost an hour, the board reconvened and accepted the resignation of one employee— JES Custodian Ruth Denney.
