UIL makes rule change for 1A, 2A school districts to allow 6th graders to play

AUSTIN, TX— The University Interscholastic League Legislative Council met Tuesday to make decisions on proposed rule changes in UIL academics, athletics, music and policy.

The Legislative Council passed a pilot program to allow conference 1A and 2A schools to use sixth graders to field as many as two teams for the 2023-24 school year.

Additionally, the Legislative Council passed an amendment to authorize UIL staff to make rule changes to stay in compliance with legislation passed by the Texas Legislature.

The Commissioner of Education must approve all rule changes passed by the Legislative Council before they take effect.
