One of many topics open for discussion during Tuesday night’s JISD Board of Trustees meeting was the possiblity of re-instating random drug testing for extracurricular activities.
Trustee Rusty Mauldin mentioned how a drug testing policy could act as a strong deterrent to drug use. The board discussed various issues on policy and associated procedures, but made no decision.
Superintendent Michael Walker said he would gather drug testing policies from other districts for the board to view before making a decision. The earliest the policy could take affect would be the 2024-25 school year.
Band, colorguard, and strutter students are headed to Northwestern State University this weekend with Josh Robinson.
They will be performing with the college band during the halftime performance against SFA.
JISD received an overall rating of a “C” from TEA based on student testing during the 2022-23 school year.
Dr. Lynn Phillips gave an update on state assessment scores stating that last year was the first year for the new STAAR format which included a writing component.
Phillips explained that in this pilot year, both students and teachers had to adjust to the new format.
She said she is optimistic that as everyone adjusts to the new format and with new grant programs in place, scores will improve in the years to come.
The safety film installation on all campuses is going up by about $42,000 after some areas were missed, according to Clint Coyne. The film should be being installed in October.
Stipends are being increased for for duties, such as chain crew ($35 pus $15 if multiple games, $50 for varsity), clock keeper ($55), game manager ($55), broadcaster ($125), ticket sellers and takers ($35 pus $15 if multiple games), announer ($55), official book keeper ($55).
Several local policy options for the Board were also approved.
Finally, the Board convened into closed session to discuss personnel and a student discipline incident.
An agenda item on personnel was not reviewed following the closed session.
