School vouchers: not the best choice for all Texans
Another special session for Texas lawmakers has been called. Why is our governor so determined to pass “school choice” vouchers?
He’s appeasing donors whose agenda calls for dismantling public education. Vouchers will serve as a discount coupon for more affluent parents to fund private (primarily Christian) education for their children. They will primarily benefit families and private schools in large suburbs, widening the gap between less affluent families (and the smaller rural districts, where public education is often the best option for the education every Texan is promised in the Texas Constitution.)
Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath, an Abbott appointee, is being sued by at least ten school districts for modifying the accountability grading system for Texas schools. The new system will reflect lower ratings for many campuses and districts, even those with improved performance. The erosion of confidence in public education this new system creates seems aptly timed.
Think vouchers help Texans? Do your homework.
