Staff Reports

Due to weather concerns for Monday afternoon, the activities scheduled for 2p have been relocated to Union Missionary Baptist Church, located at501 Houston Street.

Event organizer Hollis Shadden said the forecast called for a 37 degree windchill around 2p Monday and felt it best to move the remembrance of those lost and the acknowledgement of the contributions the Big Cypress Bayou has made to Jefferson and Marion County indoors.

Original Article:

Jefferson will take time to remember the loss of the Mittie Stephens  and take a moment to celebrate the contributions of the Big Cypress Bayou to the growth and wealth of Jefferson.

Two events will take place on Monday.

Starting at 2p at the Turning Basin park in downtown, the story of the Mittie Stephens will be told by Mitch Whitington and a bell will be rung for those lost.

Then at 6p at Union Missionary Baptist Church on Houston Street, Wes Hamilton and other musicians will provide a free concert featuring music from the Steamboat Era.

Event organizer Hollis Shadden asked the City to declare Monday, February 12 as Mittie Stephens Day, and said he hopes to make this an annual event.
