Staff Reports

The last day to file for a place on the City or JISD Board of Trustees ballot was Friday, and there’s only one contested race — for the Mayor of Jefferson.

Gary Amburn and Patricia Finstrom will face off on May 4 with one of them becoming the next Mayor of Jefferson.

However, the City is also facing the unusual of  not all available spots have someone seeking the office.

The Alderman Ward 2 seat, currently held by Will Thomas, did not have anyone sign-up to take over. Thomas announced last month that he would not be seeking re-election.

Following the May election, the new Council will have to either appoint someone to the seat, or leave it vacant.

Only two others filed for the Aldermen seats on Council, so they are automatically elected. April Taylor Johnson will retain her Ward 3 Alderman seat, and Hollis Shadden will stay the Ward 1 Alderman.

JISD only had two people seek the Place 6 and 7 seats on the School Board of Trustees.

Tolesia Smith Davis and Michael Williams will retain their seats on the Board.

As neither of the School Board seats are contested, JISD has the option of canceling their election. The City is required to hold their election for Mayor.

The Jimplecute will hold a Candidate Forum on April 18, 2024.

The last day to register to vote for the May election is April 4.
