Excelsior tokens found

Jefferson Underground

Brett Henson, A fellow digger, posted pictures of the token he recently dug in New Mexico, from the Excelsior Hotel, located in Jefferson,Texas..

First class hotels of the period, such as the Excelsior Hotel, the Driskill in Austin, or the Menger in San Antonio had a bar, or sold cigars or other amenities for which they issued tokens.

Tokens have been around as long before what we consider as “money” today with this type of “Good For” token beginning in the 1870s with westward expansion outpacing hard currency, and continued all the way up to WWII.

Texas, is home to well over 22,000 known or listed tokens with more being discovered and reported every day. Most being the only surviving example.

This token appears to be 1895-1915 by the design and die style.
