OHTP Plans 2020-21 Season Launch with Annual YNOT Awards

From Marcia Thomas

Despite the current problems facing most communities, Jefferson’s Opera House Theatre Players continue to produce and perform plays and musicals to help relieve the stress to everyone.

A season that begun in November of 2019 with a two-performance presentation of “Having Our Say”, was followed up in the spring month of May with a fun recreation of a radio show featuring two of the popular shows of the 1940s and 1950s, ‘Sam Spade, Detective” and “The Romance of Helen Trent”.

In July the group put together a USO revue reminiscent of the WW2 through the Korean War years called “USO Vintage” that played to an appreciate but small audience for two performances at the VFW. That production was partly to help fund the Marion County Veterans Memorial Wall Fund.

Now, without batting an eye, the Players are following up on their yearly appreciation event by scheduling the Ynot Awards evening for September 5 beginning 6:30 pm on the patio of Enoch’s Wine and Coffee Bar in downtown Jefferson.

The slightly scaled back event will be an evening of celebration and appreciation for the actors and technicians who work with the thespian group year in and year out. Ballots are sent out to the members of the group
for voting on the “best” in several categories including Best Actor and Actress in Drama/Comedy and in Musical Comedy productions. Each will receive a certificate of appreciation and the winning names will receive a trophy. A separate category will identify the Rising Star Award for a young person who has participated in a season production.

Also to be announced and presented are the selections by board members for several local awards including the Lucille M. Terry Cultural and Performing Arts Award, the Dorothy Award, the Good Neighbor Award and the Sherry’s Big Heart Award. The Terry Award winner will be profiled in the groups new brochure.

According to theatre president, Marcia Thomas, there will have to be a ceiling limit of 30 on the number of persons that can attend the event and extra guests will not be able to attend and membership as well as actors have been notified to make reservations early.

Complimentary wine, punch and snacks will be available and there is no charge to attend. Members who have joined as a couple may attend together with early notification.
