Have You Met Bobby Cole?

Darla McCorkle/Columnist

Now that I upgraded Hugh from boyfriend to husband, I’m excited to introduce ya’ll to my new boyfriend from afar. That just means I like him, he doesn’t know my name. See,  I’m the type that’ll make a husband, but I also love just having a man on the side that I’m liking a little. I especially like those political types that can back up a truck and trailer while talking about women’s rights and decriminalizing low quanity drug possession. It’s a niche market and hard to find, but I may be getting close.

Have ya’ll heard about Bobby Cole?

Well, he doesn’t know it yet but I’m gonna talk about him being my new boyfriend until we get him elected governor. Then, him and his wife can go live in Austin together.

I felt a fire in me that I thought menopause had dampened when I saw a video of Bobby Cole on social media  and not only did he say he wanted to legalize marijuana but then he said that abortions were a private decision between a woman, her family, and her doctors. I know! I know! Don’t ya just wanna swoon?! Can you imagine? I mean, think about it! A politician that believes such a difficult decision like regarding having a child can be left in the hands of the person carrying it, her family, and her doctor. Wow! What a slippery slope! Next, he’ll say I can drive at night! Don’t tell him I can’t see well enough for all that!

The part that really made me a little frothy was when right there on the screen it said he wants to legalize marijuana. He doesn’t know it, but my boyfriend standards are so low I would’ve settled for decriminlization. I had long ago given up on legalization. Heaven forbid farmers in Texas farm again and farm something profitable. Do you know how many “farmers” (really just people that own lots of land) get paid to NOT grow a crop. Often it is a crop they had no intention of growing. I know this because when Hugh’s dad passed away he had over 100 acres that he had once grown wheat on. Keep in mind he grew that wheat in the late 70s early 80s and then was asked to not grow it because too many people were growing it. So he was provided a check to not grow wheat. The idea being he’d grow something else. He grew grass for hay instead. That provided a nice little supplement for the cattle. Fast forward decades and Hugh inherits the property and under his ownership was also paid for NOT growing wheat on land he wasn’t going to farm nor had cattle on. This happens all over Texas. Land just sitting. Land that could be full of weed and making us fistfuls of money.

Know what else legalizing weed could do? Make our prisons a little less crowded. Marijuana smokers wouldn’t be locked up with rapists and pedophiles. They’d be out working at dispenseries teaching Nana which bowl she wants to smoke to help her arthritis. Texans growing something again. Texans working. Prisons for criminals.

My new boyfriend may not have my same vision but at least he is willing to have the conversation. He’s so smart and handsome.

But what he really needs is to be able to campaign across Texas and if ya can’t donate money then help your county by getting people registered to vote. Abbott has done nothing but disgrace Texas over and over again. Texas needs to change before we end up a dustbowl that surrounds Austin and Dallas. Texas is more than two cities full of millionaires. Texas is a buncha little towns with little families trying to survive and succeed. Abbott lost sight of us years ago, so let’s send him rolling down the hill back to where he came from.
