Father, Daughter ‘Mine’ River

Bruce Henry found a fun way of letting his daughters be creative and cleaning up the environment – one piece of iron at a time.

The Marshall resident was in Jefferson on Wednesday to scout out the bayou for possible things he and his daughters can “mine” from the bottom.

They use a 2,600 pull pound magnet, and two kayaks, to scour the river bottom and pull up lost pieces of iron.

“The first time we did this was at a creek under a railroad crossing in Marshall,” Henry said. “We pulled up about 200 pounds of iron.”

Wednesday’s attempts found numerous railroad spikes – including one which is probably an original to the trestle construction – and some other miscellaneous iron pieces.

Henry and his daughters will be back in Jefferson on Saturday for more.
