Early voting underway
Early Voting continues this week at Jefferson City Hall.
Polls will be open this year on Saturday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., and again on Monday from8 a.m. – 5 p.m.. The last day of Early Voting is Tuesday, from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m.
The General Election will be on May 1 and polls will be open from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m.
All voting will take place at the City of Jefferson Council Chambers/Fire Station, 102 N Polk St.
Elections coordinators would also like to remind everyone that unless you are there to vote or conduct business with the City, no one is allowed within the ballot boundaries while the polls are open.
Earth Day cleanup reset
Due to dumpsters not being delivered last week, the City of Jefferson will hold Earth Day Cleanup this Saturday, April 23. Roll-off dumpsters are scheduled to be available at both the Jefferson Police Department building on North Alley Street and at the Community Center on Haywood Street.
The City requests, however, that if a roll-off dumpster is not present, to please not leave items in any other dumpster nearby.
Special council meeting planned
The Jefferson City Council will hold a special meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Jefferson Institute, 120 E. Austin Street, Ballroom C.
Council is scheduled to adjourn into Executive Session under Section 551.074 Personnel Matters: Discussion regarding the process and procedures for the appointment of a City Administrator
Mayor Rob Baker clarified the description that the candidates have some individual items for the appointment and those items are being discussed along with each candidate.
Following the Executive Session, they will discuss and consider appropriate action to appoint City Administrator Candidate for full time employment, and then consider and/or approve a candidate to the City Administrator role for the City of Jefferson.
The Jimplecute/Herald will be live for the open portions of the meeting.
Auditions continue
Auditions for the Opera House Theatre Players upcoming productions will continue on Saturday and Sunday at the Parish Hall of Christ Episcopal Church in Jefferson.
Two plays are being considered.
The first of which, “Ancestral Voices,” will be produced at the end of May as a reading play.
Needed are three men— two older and one younger— and three women who’s ages could range from 30s to 60s.
The story is set right before World War II when a family discovers their grandmother is divorcing her husband of many years and how it affects all who are wealthy society people from old families of the community.
“Litte Wokmen: The Musical” is planned for production in July and will need young girls as well as older women for singing roles.
There are also three mens’ roles with one being younger and two older.
All have some singing to do.
The story is adapted from the famous novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott and is set in 1865.
Those wishing to sing must do so acapella or bring a CD that shows range of voice.
Some movement will be choreographed for the musical and reading music is a plus.

Temporary street closures
Union Pacific Railroad notified the City late Tuesday about planned street closures on Saturday and Monday.
According to the announcement made by Jefferson Mayor Rob Baker prior to the start of Tuesday’s City Council, the following railroad crossings will temporarily close for repairs:
• Alley and N. Cass Streets, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday,
• Mulberry Street, 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday.

The Marion County Chamber of Commerce will JPD Chief Tino Perez at noon Monday, April 26, to discuss Crime Prevention and Awareness for your small business.
This event will be held in the front ballroom of the Jeffersonian Institute. Lunch will be provided. The event is free and open to the public.
Area Wide Bazaar slated for May 1
Don’t miss the opportunity to play, shop or sell at South Side Chapel’s Bazaar on Saturday, May 1. The public is welcome to enjoy the day from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at 1949 Pops Landing Road, 3.5 miles east of Hwy. 259 off Hwy. 450 in Ore City.
There will be fun games and activities for kids.
Organizers say there will be oodles of free clothing— including children as well as adult sizes, dollar (hot) dogs and refreshments of all sorts.
Vendors are requested for indoor table/chair or a big outdoor spot with your set-up, either just $10. They are welcome to make crafts, sell tools, décor, gifts, fashion, food, homemade items, furniture, antiques, garage sale items, sports gear, vehicles, whatever.

County to rededicate Courthouse
Marion County elected officials and employees invite the public to come celebrate the official re-opening of the 1913 Historic Courthouse at 10 a.m. Saturday May 22.
The courthouse has undergone 2.6 years of complete renovation through a grant provided by the Texas Historical Commission Courthouse Restoration program.
There will be a brief ceremony on Austin Street and then an open house and reception in the courtroom.
