Council Meets Tonight to Review CAD Budget Proposal

City of Jefferson

Jefferson City Council will hold a special meeting at 5:30p today at the Transportation Center to discuss the Marion Central Appraisal District 2022 Operating Budget. This is the only item on the agenda.

Council tabled the budget proposal at their meeting in May, however, after review, determined any action short of rejecting the proposed budget is considered approval of the budget. They originally tabled it to allow Chief Appraiser Ann Lummus an additional opportunity to attend and answer questions. Under State Law, the taxing entities have 30 days from when the budget is delivered to them to approve or reject it. The budget was delivered to the City on May 12, 2021.

Mayor Rob Baker has recommended Council table or take no action on any request to the City where the individuals making the request are not present when the request is reviewed by Council.

The Marion County Commissioners Court rejected the budget last week for “salary increases.” Salaries have been a point of contention with the budget as CAD employees are paid significantly more than other County employees.

Jefferson ISD School Board is also set to take up the budget in their regular meeting tonight.

If the County, School, and City all reject the proposed budget, then the Appraisal District will have to start over with a new budget proposal.

The Herald/Jimplecute will be live for both the City and JISD meetings tonight.
