Council to Talk Non-Golf Cart Vehicles, Budget at Tuesday Special Meeting

City of Jefferson

The Jefferson City Council will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Jefferson Transportation and Visitors Center to discuss the use of Non-Golf Cart Vehicles on city roads and receive public input.

The issues was raised last year by Francene DePrez Rainey on how the city could work with events which have visitors bringing side-by-side, or ATV/UTV type vehicles to town.

Currently the City follows state law and only allows vehicles classified as Golf Carts on city streets. They must have head and tail lights, a slow moving vehicle sign, and rear view mirrors. The city also requires a minimum age of 16, and insurance to drive a golf cart. ATV/UTV vehicles generally have tires designed for off-road, not street use, and some can go in excess of 25 miles per hour.

Concerns have been expressed by various individuals about minors driving golf carts, whether supervised or not, and the use of ATV/UTV vehicles on the streets.

Council will also consider approving the purchase of camera [sic] for the Police Cars to the tune of $14,555.

The Mayor is slated to discuss his Citizen Action Committee Launch on August 12, and his Jefferson Diversity Committee Launch on August 17.

Ward 1 Alderman Jim Finstrom has requested a building permit for a pavilion in his back yard.

Council is also set to discuss if it is appropriate for newly appointed Ward 2 Alderman Jamey Parsons to make appointments to Tourism and JEDCO boards.

Following the meeting, Council will hold their first Budget Workshop for the 2021-2022 fiscal year.

The Jimplecute/Herald will be live.
