New business finds a niche in Jefferson

Another new business has found a home in downtown Jefferson and owners say they have been welcomed with open arms.

The Jefferson Flower Market opened its doors on June 1 and were welcomed to the membership of the Marion County Chamber of Commerce earlier this month.

“It has been amazing,” said co-owner Sonia Smith. “The community has welcomed us with open arms. It has been so well received and we are blessed to be in a community such as Jefferson.”

Smith, who co-owns the shop with her daughter Hannah Womack,

said the business opening in Jefferson was the culmination of a five-year plan.

“I am a retired school-teacher,” Smith said. “I knew when I retired from teaching, I wanted to open a florist… we did some market research and discovered Jefferson was in need of a local florist.”

While her research pointed to Jefferson, she thanks the Almighty for actually moving her our direction.

“God spoke to me,” Smith said. “I was literally lying in bed one night and heard a voice say, ‘go to Jefferson.’ So, I did. I woke up the next morning and came to town. I saw a building with a ‘For Rent’ sign in the window. I called the number and signed a lease that afternoon… and here we are.”

The shop is a full-service florist. They can handle weddings, funerals, dances, receptions— any and all events that call for a little color.

Jefferson Flower Market also offers fresh plants, home décor, seasonal designs and a full time of gift items.

They also serve as event and seasonal decorators.

And, every Saturday, they host a Fresh Cut Flower Bar.

“This gives folks an opportunity to come by and design their own arrangements,” Smith said. “We are seeing more and more folks take and advantage of this as well as seeing some of the same faces every week… we have people stop the shop every morning just to say ‘hi’ and enjoy the sweet smells… it is all very heart warming.”
