Jefferson PD seeing uptick in crime

Staff Reports

Theft and the passing of counterfeit bills is increasing in Jefferson according to JPD Chief Florentino Perez.

The first week of December has seen an increase in the passing of counterfeit bills, specifically $20, $50, and $100 denominations. Perez encourages merchants to check bills prior to accepting them to minimize loss.

Early this week a vehicle was stolen from it’s downtown parking spot. Perez said the thieves  knew how to get into the vehicle and hotwire it quickly. Those with vehicles downtown are encouraged to make sure they are locked at all times and in well lit areas if possible.

Perez said Harrison County and Marshall have also reported a rise in these types of crime and the increase of incidents may be related.

He encourages individuals to report suspicious persons or vehicles to police.
