At the end of Monday’s Commissioners Court meeting, Marion County Judge Leward LaFleur read a letter from Marion County Sheriff David McKnight in which McKnight announced his plan to retire at the end of May.
McKnight, who has served as sheriff for two terms and did not seek re-election this year, said in his letter:
“It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Marion County for the past 2 terms as Sheriff. In addition, it has been my privilege to work with you all, and with all of the officials and employees of every department in the County. I cherish the friendship of each of you.”
Letter of Retirement
McKnight said he understood, that “regardless of my effective retirement date,” he was responsible for the duties of Sheriff until the Commissioners Court appoints a replacement.
“I will work with the staff to ensure the department runs smoothly until that date, and will be available for a smooth transition with whomever you choose to appoint,” McKnight wrote.
David Capps, Constable Pct 1, and David Quada are both seeking the position of Sheriff in the November election.
