Five Marion County students have been named this year’s winners in the annual American History Essay Contest sponsored by the Martha McCraw Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Students were recently presented their award certificates and medals at their respective schools by Chapter Regent Meriam Blair.

The Middle School essay topic this year was “The Boston Massacre.”

Students were asked to pretend they lived in Boston during that event, detailing what they experienced and how their family dealt with the growing tensions of the time.  Winners from Jefferson Middle School were sixth grader Samantha Porter, seventh grader Payten Kimble, and eighth grader Kayleigh Ann Snead.

High School students this year discussed the topic, “Recollections of Christopher Columbus.”

They wrote as if they were privileged to actually interview the famous explorer near the end of his life.  Descriptions of that event included their perceptions of his personality, adventures, and his sense of accomplishment and  disappointments.  Winners selected were previous winner Carson Bolick from the ninth grade and Curliyah Jefferson from the eleventh grade.

Seventh grader Payten Kimble, eighth grader Kayleigh Ann Snead, and Sixth grader Samantha Porter.

Judges for the contest this year were Pat Daniel and DAR members Lucile Perry and Stacy Mills.  Special thanks are extended to the respective teachers who encouraged the students as well as to Tim Phy and Amber Hitchcock, administrators at their respective schools.
