Jefferson gears up for busy weekend of events

In it’s 21st year, the Outlaw Nationals Car Show is the longest running car show in Jefferson and continues to grow and be an annual tradition in downtown.

This year the show is set for April 16 and 17, and it takes over the brick streets with cars of every type – from classics, to vintage, to new, to Ratrods, of all makes and models.

The Phoenix Organization of Jefferson started hosting this event 10 years ago when the previous hosts stepped down. This event is very popular for car enthusiasts, so it made perfect sense to continue the event and add to it each year. There are many vehicle classes to enter. Even if it does not run, if you can get here, bring it!

Proceeds are part of the annual donation the Phoenix Organization gives to Camp I’m Still Me for burn survivors.

Also this weekend is the spring edition of History, Haunts and Legends Paranormal Conference. Primarily taking place at the Jefferson Convention and Visitors Center, they also hold nighttime investigations at various locations around town.

This year’s  investigations will occur at The Jefferson Hotel, The Azalea Inn, The Magnolias, The Writers Loft, Heather’s Guest Haus, The Claiborne House, and the Benefield House.

Speakers at this year’s event include Jeffersonian Mitchel Whitington, Dr. Rita Louise,  Nikki Folsom, Greg Lawson, Lisa Hale, Brian Clune, Dan and Teresa Duke, Larry Flaxman, Craig Woolheater, Pete Haviland, John Cappello, Maria Santos Kempf, Martha Decker, Jeromy Jones, Greg Stephens, April Roane and Susan Hill.

Tickets are available at the door starting Saturday morning.

The weekend will end with the Opera House Theatre Players Annual Chocolate Sunday at the Jefferson Hotel.

When young Riley Cox (aka Rockin’ Riliey) takes the stage at any time, the crowd goes wild as he plays some of the great rock and roll songs of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats, Domino and other rock n’ roll icons on the keyboard.  He will also sing some of the big hits of the 60s.

Dressed in a new costume for the Opera House Theatre Players upcoming fund-raiser, Chocolate Sunday, Riley will appear as one of the entertainers that will perform during the judging of the numerous chocolate dishes that have been entered into the Best Chocolate Creation contest.  The public will be admitted at 2 pm for a donation of $12 at the door on Sunday, April l18 at one of Jefferson’s newest attractions, the electedly decorated Jefferson Hotel on Austn Street.

Area cooks and chefs are invited to submit their creation between 12:45 pm and 1:45 pm at the hotel dining room where the entires will be laid out on tables for tasting.  Judges for the event are to women business owners in Shreveport, Nicole  of Sweetport, an ice cream shop, and Kelli of Good Granoly, a bakery that specializes in baked goods made with organic granola.  The entries will be judge on taste, texture and design from 2 to 3 pm while the entertainment is going on.

There is no cost to enter and ribbons and prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be announced at 3 pm followed by an invitation to all those attending to sample each of the creations submitted at no further cost.
