Lions to host anniversary event

The Jefferson Lions Club will celebrate 75 years of service with a community event on May 15 at Lions Park. 

“We want this to be an event for the entire community,” said Lions Club member Peggy Walker. “We will have food trucks, a bounce house, live music and program at 1 p.m.” 

The event is slated from 12-4 p.m. and will feature music from local classic rock band Flashback.

Also on the agenda is special recognition of long time Jefferson Lions Club member Wayman Moore. 

Now in his early 90s, Moore has been a member of the Jefferson Lions club since 1952. 

“He worked tirelessly for the Lions Park Christmas Tree Enchanted Forest,” Walker said. “He cooked many years for the Lions Golf Tournament. He remembers when the club met at the Jefferson Hotel and would eat a family style lunch for 50 cents.”

Moore is a retired business maned who has worked for or owned LeCuno Oil, Gulf Service Station, Pic-N-Pay Grocery, Stak-A-Sak Grocery, D.H. Snyder, Moore Insurance, Moore Real Estate, Big M Farm Supply and Moore’s Econo Wash.

“Wayman Moore is everything a Lion should be,” Walker said. “He exemplifies the Lions Motto: We Serve.”

The event will be also feature and guest appearance by Lions International Past President Jimmy Ross as well as mayoral and county proclamations declaring May 15 Wayman Moore/ Jefferson Lions Club 75th Anniversary Day.   

In 1917 Melvin Jones, set forth to form an international movement to improve the lives of vulnerable people around the world. 

This organization, known as Lions Club International, has become the world’s largest service organization, now grown to 1.4 million members, 48,000 clubs, and serving 210 countries and regions around the world; and 

The Jefferson Texas Lions Club, founded in 1946, is a diverse group of more than 25 members, both men and women, all from different backgrounds and professions committed to serving our local community.

The proclamation will read, in part, “WHEREAS, for 75 years the Jefferson Lions Club has provided outstanding and commendable leadership and service to the Jefferson community, enriching Marion County as a whole. They continue to demonstrate the principles of altruism and generosity, making Jefferson and Marion County a great place to live….

WHEREAS, Wayman Moore, at 93 years young, as a member of the Jefferson Lions Club since 1952, with perfect attendance for 26 years, has selflessly served the community throughout his lifetime, both publicly and privately…”

“We are looking forward to this celebration and hope the entire community is able to attend,” Walker said.
