March Miata Madness

An annual event open to Mazda Miatas to be held in the 100 block of E Austin St in Jefferson, TX. The block in front of the Jefferson General Store will be blocked off for a Show n’ Shine from 8AM -2PM.

 Car show open to spectators at no charge! 

Square Dancing

The East Texas Square an Round Dance Association is holding their annual festival March 25-26 at the Marshall Civic Center.. 

 Friday night starts with Pre-Rounds  7-7:30; Grand March at 7:30 then a Quick welcome, prayer, pledge a few intro’s, then dance until 10.   

Saturday morning 9:00 a.m. – 11:50 will be Mainstream, Plus, and Rounds workshop; 12-1 p.m  East Texas Fashion Show; 1:45 p.m. – 3 p.m. Ole fashion calling with Harvest Moon Countrygrass performing evening and Tim Tyl 6 p.m. Opening ceremonies, grand march then square dancing will start.

Free admission to watch for spectators.

Operation Healthy Paws

Friends of Jefferson Animals is sponsoring Operation Healthy Paws from 10a-2p March 26 at 305 E. Austin Street. Do you have questions? We have answers.

Operation Healthy Paws is part of a community-wide spay/neuter/pet-health campaign designed to help people whose companion animals need comprehensive, preventive health care. If you are qualified, you will receive a voucher to use at the Animal Protection League for spay/neuter and a rabies vaccine. You will also be eligible to bring your pet for additional vaccines at a later date to be determined.

Who is eligible?

1. People with a personal or family pet not previously spayed or neutered. No rescues or rescue organizations.

2. Residents of Marion County. 

Please leave your pets at home – surgery or treatment will not happen on-site. Do feel free to bring your children. We’ll have information booths and kid-friendly activities.

It’s first come, first served for vouchers! Come early to claim yours!

FOJA is also looking for matching corporate sponsors should any business like to donate to help spay/neuter more animals in Marion County. We want to maximize this endeavor and look forward to seeing everyone there.

OHTP Concert

The Jefferson Opera House Theatre Players will present a concert of Oscar Winning songs performed by Anthony Robinson at 5 p.m. Sunday, March 27, at Union Baptist Church Event Center, 520 Houston St. Robinson is an Adjunct Professor of Percussion at ETBU and member of the US Air Force Band of the West. Tickets are $15 at the door. Dress is After 5. The event is a fundraiser for OHTP.

JPS Roundup

Jefferson Primary School will be holding their annual Roundup for Kindergarten and Head Start from 10a-6p March 29, at the school. Parents will need to bring Student’s Birth Certificate, Social Security Card, shot records, Parents Driver’s License or ID, voter registration card or residential lease or tax statement or proof of home purchase. APL 

Animal Protection League will be in Jefferson twice in April and is offering FREE dog distemper/parvo (DAPPv) and free cat Distemper (Feline HCP) vaccinations. They have extended this offer until the end of April or as long as supplies last. They will be at the corner of Polk and Henderson streets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 11 and April 30th. Benefit Concert Planned

East Texas Performing Arts is going to have a benefit concert/ fundraiser for the Marion County families affected by the tornados. According to reports, there are 15 families in Marion County who lost their homes during the recent storms. More details will be provided as they become available. Candidate Forum 

Round 1

MCDCSCO will be sponsoring a Candidate Forum on Tuesday, April 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Jefferson Community Center, 501 Haywood St. All candidates for JISD School Board and Jefferson City Council, both those with an opponent and those without, are invited to attend and greet and discuss questions with constitutents.

The Jefferson Jimplecute will be sponsoring a Candidate Forum on Thursday, April 21 at 7 p.m. at the Jefferson Transportation Center. 

All candidates for City Council and JISD School Board are invited. 

It will be a Question and Answer style session. The public is invited to submit questions to the Jimplecute prior to the event at jeffersonjimplecute@gmail.com

Paddling Flotilla

The Cypress Basin Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists are holding their 10th Earth Day Paddling Flotilla at Caddo Lake on April 23. The event runs from 7:30a-2p and starts and ends at Shady Glade Resort. Breakfast snacks will be provided, along with a Dutch oven cooking demonstration, a fishing education table, a massage chair opportunity, corn hole games, raffle, silent auction, the Rolling Stove food truck will be there, and much more. Chamber Ambassadors

Can you help? The Marion County Chamber of Commerce is looking for folks who would be willing to volunteer on Saturdays for a few hours in the Ambassador program. What does an MCCC Ambassador do? 

They will assist visitors downtown by answering questions (Where are the restrooms?) and passing out information to local events, attractions, and businesses. Ambassadors will be there as helpful hospitality hosts, welcoming guests to our community. 

Be prepared to have fun! Can you spare a few hours (1-4 hours) to help, 1 or 2 Saturdays per month?? This would be great for retirees and high school juniors/seniors, NHS members, Scouts, etc. who need volunteer hours. For more information contact the Chamber at 903-665-2672 or Peg Brown-Walker.

Workforce Solutions in Jefferson

Workforce Solutions of East Texas is in Jefferson from 10a-3p every Tuesday at Texas Tech Satellite Campus, 120 E. Austin Street. Their Access Point locations have a Workforce Solutions resource area where job seekers can register for WorkinTexas.com, receive assistance with job searches, resume writing, workshops and access to other resources. 

Honeybees

Jefferson’s “Bee Man” Stanford Brantley wants to remind everyone as the weather starts getting warmer honeybees will being moving around. If you find a hive of bees, he asks that you contact him to come remove the bees instead of killing them. Bees will often rest in water meter covers or other similar protected spaces.
