John Roberts Blackburn MD, 72, of Holly Lake Ranch, left this world April 4th, 2022 (04-04-22), at home with his family. He fought diabetes for 47 years after diagnosing himself in medical school.
He was born at home on January 30th, 1950, to JD Blackburn and Lola Irene Roberts in Jefferson, TX.
John graduated from UT Austin in 3 years, attended UTSW medical school and then six years of residency in New Orleans at Tulane Medical. He practiced in several places in Urology for over 30 years.
He married Betty Ruth Hackney on July 8th, 1972, and they had two children, Jason and Justin.
He and Betty loved to cruise and travel around in their RV’s. John loved computers and technology, old and new. He was a HAM radio operator and avid movie collector. He enjoyed genealogy, discovering stories of his ancestors back to the 1700’s.
John is survived by his wife Betty, sons Jason Roberts Blackburn of Lubbock, Justin Wade Blackburn, and his “favorite” daughter-in-law, Monica Olivas Blackburn of Farmers Branch, brother James D Blackburn MD and sister-in-law Ann of Jefferson, sister-in-law Monika Blackburn Sullivan of Jefferson, cousin Jeffrey Fuquay and wife Dawn of Jefferson, brother-in-law Kenneth Hackney and wife Nancy of Athens, sister-in-law Martha Hackney Summerlin and Travis of Garland and sister-in-law Mary Hackney Andrews of Marshall. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents JD Blackburn and Lola Roberts Blackburn and his brother T Jerry Blackburn.
John Blackburn was known for his love of music, his quick wit and odd sense of humor, but especially his love for his wife and children and his favorite Snorkie Holly all of whom were present at his bedside.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the Captain Wm. Perry Chapel of Haggard Funeral Home, 203 East Clarksville, Jefferson, Texas with Rev. Virginia Pevey officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the services in the chapel.
