Staff Reports

County residents will have one last chance to hear from City and JISD School Board candidates prior to the start of early voting.

This coming Thursday at 6:30 p.m. the Jefferson Jimplecute is sponsoring a candidate forum at the Jefferson Transportation Center.

All candidates for City Council, Mayor, and JISD School Board Trustees, are invited to attend a structured question and answer forum.

The event will also be live streamed on the Jimplecute’s FaceBook and YouTube channels.

Concerns were raised by former Alderman and Mayor Carey Heaster at the end of last week’s City Council meeting about the ability to use the Transportation Center for “political events.”

However, after the Jimplecute staff and two city employees reviewed City Council minute records and indexes from 2004 to 2022, no record could be found indicating any such restriction.

As such, the Jimplecute intends to continue with the location as “this isn’t a political event in the strictest sense,” said Jimplecute co-publisher Hugh Lewis. “This is a community information event to allow the greatest number of residents to hear from the potential elected officials. It’s  non-partisan and all candidates are invited to attend.”

The forum will allow for a 3-minute opening statement, followed by a series of questions where candidates will have 90 seconds to respond. Closing 3-minute statements will also be given.

The public is also invited.
