Heat Avisory
The National Weather Service continues to advise area residents to be careful when outdoors as the high temperatures and little rain will continue into next week. There is also poor air quality warnings as well. The warnings recommend drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible, stay out of direct sun and to check on relatives and neighbors.
Karnack Community Center
The former George Carver Elementary School at Karnack was recently converted to a Community Center. There will be a Ribbon Cutting and Opening Day Activities, as well as an Alumni Get-Together on Friday starting at 1:30p. Kids’ Play Day will start at 1:30, A Ribbon Cutting at 2:30p, the gym will open from 5-7p and the Alumni Get-Together will start at 7p. For more information, call 903-578-0485. APL will be back in Jefferson on June 20 at the corner of Polk and Henderson streets. Advance reservations are required for spay/neuter services. .
10 Years of ETPA
East Texas Performing Arts will hold a 10 year Anniversary Ribbon Cutting at the Marion County Chamber of Commerce, 111 E. Austin St., at 11 a.m .Tuesday, June 21. Refreshments, announcements, networking and a prize drawing will be held..The public is invited to attend.
Marion County/ American Red Cross to Hold Volunteer Disaster Relief Training
Jefferson, Texas – A volunteer training is scheduled for Thursday, June 23rd
From 8am-4pm at the Jefferson Convention and Visitors Bureau 305 E. Austin St, Jefferson, TX 75657. This will be a lesson learned training (from our recent tornado) and shelter simulation. Anyone who wishes to be a disaster relief volunteer please make plans to attend. Please RSVP with the Marion County Judges office at 903-665-3261. This event is open to any resident of Marion, Gregg, Harrison, Upshur, and Cass County. The training will be provided by the American Red Cross.
Rededication
The Jesse-Allen-Wise Garden Club will hold a Rededication Ceremony and Open House for the newly restored Ruth Lester memorial and Playhouse at 5p.m. June 23. The Garden Club stated they’d like to thank the Julie Dowell Estate, the Schluter Foundation, and the Bettelheim Foundation for their donations towards the project.
Ribbon Cutting
Jefferson’s Professional Education and Academic Advising arm of Texas Tech University will hold a ribbon cutting and open house from 9-11:30a Saturday, June 25, at the Jeffersonian Institute. RSVP is requested.. .
Substitute Training
JISD will hold Substitute Training for new substitutes from 9-noon on July 26 at the JISD Administration building. Returning Substitute training will be from 1-2:30p. Those interested should contact Lynn Phillips or Barbara Cox at the Administration building at 903-665-2461 for more information and to get the application packet prior to the training.
Master Naturalists Training Class
The Cypress Basin Chapter of Texas Master Naturalists is beginning a new training class August 19th, 2022. The required 40 hours of training is spread over 4 months, one weekend a month (Friday 6-9pm and Saturday 9-5). Most classes will be held at the Caddo Lake National Wildlife Refuge in Karnack. Cost is $40 for an individual or $55 for a couple. Being a Master Naturalist includes volunteering to provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and areas in East Texas. US Department of Education and Section 504 Rules
The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights (OCR) has announced that it intends to propose amendments to the Department’s regulations implementing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a civil rights law prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability. As part of this process, OCR is seeking written suggestions from the public, providing an opportunity for your voice to be heard, about how best to improve the current regulations. The 504 regulations have not been revised since they were issued in 1977. New rules will impact independent school districts as well as state colleges and universities. MCY Football Workouts
Marion County Youth Football workouts will be from 6-7:30p every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, May 30-June 30, at the Bulldog Practice Field at the High School. Signups to play will also be available. Team coaches need to attend. Tramane Nelson also says even if you don’t want to play, but want to work out, as long as attending school, you are welcome to attend.
Summer Reading
The Jefferson Carnegie Library will start their Summer Reading Program from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday June 8 and continuing each Wednesday through July 27. Children ages Pre-K through 5th grade are invited to attend this free weekly event.
