For many, there is no better way to start the day than with a warm cup of coffee. The smell of the brewed beans alone can help jumpstart almost anybody’s day.

However, for coffee shops like Port Jefferson Coffee Roasters, this tale is a bit different. Rather than being greeted with the smell of brewed coffee when you first enter the building, you are greeted with the inviting smell of fresh cocoa beans.

As your eyes scan the room, you begin to notice an array of shelves stocked with bags of coffee beans, mugs, t-shirts and K-Cups.

Aside from serving the community, owners, Jarod and Janna Hanson have worked to keep Jarod’s father’s legacy alive post-pandemic.

Port Jefferson Coffee Roasters opened its doors in November 2022, only two years shortly after its mother-company, Nine Flags Coffee Roasters, closed its doors due to COVID-19.

After closing, Jarod and Janna believed that the best way to keep their father’s dream alive was by opening Port Jefferson Coffee Roasters.

This has further encouraged the Hansons to keep the business in the family. Both Jarod and Janna work day-in and day-out in the shop to ensure the products are up to par and the environment continues to serve as a home away from home.

“We got into the coffee bean idea through my father-in-law. Back in 2017, he opened his own coffee shop, and he did all of his own roasting as well,” Janna said. “We wanted to stay on the retail side of things and produce a good coffee that everybody can have in their businesses and their homes.”

Since its grand opening, Port Jefferson Coffee Roasters has made quite a name for itself in the Jefferson community. Not only have the Hansons been able to serve their community one bean at a time, but they have established a brand that the community can trust.

“Since opening, business has been fantastic. Our online sales have been successful, and we have continued to grow and we want to continue to grow for many years. We don’t want to stop doing this,” Janna said.

The best seller amongst the flavored beans is the Texas Pecan, which was introduced to customers a month after the shop opened.

This flavor, alongside the various others offered, have become hits for companies like 1852 on Austin, Haywood House, Kitt’s Kornbread, and many more.

For those looking to sample these rich, delicious coffee flavors, Port Jefferson Coffee Roasters can be found at places like Kennedy Manor, the Carriage House Bed and Breakfast, and the Front Porch on Polk.

Despite the fact the shop is not your traditional coffee shop, customers have expressed that the environment of the shop feels like a home away from home.

With that being said, the Hanson’s main goal includes getting the name out for more people to be able to enjoy that just brewed feeling from the comfort of their homes.

“We want to go around the country supplying good, gourmet coffee locally and worldwide. We want to supply to all the businesses for events and be in public homes. Our main goal is to become an online distributor of coffee,” Janna said.

Aside from finding them at their storefront on Lafayette Street, Jarod and Janna can be spotted at events and organizations like the Lion’s Club meetings and community-wide events like Mardi Gras and the Candlelight Tours.
