WINNSBORO, Tx — Multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Darrell Scott performs at 7:30 p.m. May 20 on The Bowery Stage in downtown Winnsboro.
Scott’s music is centered in the beauty of everyday moments that help make sense of the world. He comes from a musical family with a father, Wayne Scott, who had him smitten with guitars by the age of four.
Besides writing, performing and producing albums of his own music, he’s toured with the likes of Robert Plant and the Zac Brown Band, and collaborated with many others including Hayes Carll, Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. He’s written songs for The Chicks, Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson, Patty Loveless, and Montgomery Gentry to name a few.
He’s known for hits like “Long Time Gone,” “A Crooked Road,” and “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.” “Harlan” was covered by Brad Paisley, Dave Alvin, and the Ruby Friedman Orchestra in different episodes of the TV drama Justified, and Scott sang it himself for the final episode of the series.
In July 2020, he released a digital single live recording “Satisfied Mind,” originally a 1955 Porter Wagoner song. Scott sings lead and is joined by Patty Grifffin, Byron House, Buddy Miller, and Marco Giovino. The recording was done during a world tour with Robert Plant and Band of Joy.
Also produced in 2020 is Darrell Scott Sings the Blues of Hank Williams, where he dives into the emotion of nine classic Williams songs of heartbreak and lost loves.
His latest album, Jarasco, was named after a village along the Colorado and New Mexico border. It kicks off with “There’s a Stone Around My Belly,” a tribute to the country retreat where he lives near Nashville.
“I’ve been up on a mountain, I’ve been rolling like a stone
Searching this whole world over for a place to call my own,
Alone to see the sunset, and to count what I have lost
Alone to read Walt Whitman and live like Robert Frost.”
Scott often leads songwriting workshops to help people tell their own truths with their stories, and says he is as busy as always writing, producing, performing, and just plain fully immersing himself in life.
