Memorial Day

• There will be a special Memorial Day Celebration on Monday, May 29 at 10a.m. at the Oakwood Cemetery in Jefferson, TX.  This event is presented by American Legion Post 304 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10373.  The program will include the Color Guard represented by Junior ROTC from Marshall High School.  The National Anthem will be sung by the Seth Buckner family.  Father John Himes, Christ Episcopal Church Jefferson, will also be presenting.  There will also be a special presentation of the meaning of each of the folds of our flag.  The event will close with gun and cannon salute, and taps. 7th Annual Memorial Day Service at SouthSide Chapel will hold a God Bless America Memorial Day Service and Luncheon starting at 12:30p with a barbecue luncheon at SouthSide Chapel, 1949 Pops Landing Rd, 4 miles east of Hwy 259 in Ore City. It is a special time to honor Heroes who gave their lives to insure our freedoms and recognize those who served to protect our country’s freedoms.  The program starts at 2:00 p.m. and will include special musician and soloist, guest speakers and video. You are invited and encouraged to share your military experience or family memory. Bees

Honeybees are out in full swarm now that summer is almost here. If you have bees, don’t call an exterminator. Instead, call Stamford Brantley at 903-742-2765 and let him help remove and relocate them.

Kid’s Fish Day

The 24th Annual Kid’s Fish Day will start at 8a June 3rd at Hurricane Creek Recreation Area at Lake O’the Pines. 

Beef

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office is holding a Beef Cattle Production and Management Lunch-and-Learn Webinar series form 12-1p every Tuesday in May and June. Topics include: 5/30 Heard Nutrition Management, 6/6 Pasture/Hayland Management, 6/13 Low Stress Cattle Handling, and 6/20 Disaster Preparedness. Broadband

The Texas Broadband Development Office is preparing to administer key federal programs from the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, including funds for State Planning Grants to expand digital opportunities. The Texas BDO wants to hear from constituents in your area about barriers to digital opportunities. Your participation will not only help close the digital divide in our state but will also highlight the important work of organizations throughout Texas helping our communities get connected online. School Choice

The Marion County Republican Assembly is hosting a discussion by the Texas Public Policy foundation on School Choice options at 6:30p June 13 at the Jefferson Visitor Center. Roy Maynard with TPPF will be leading the discussion. For more information, 

Women’s Day

Bethlehem Baptist Church in Smithland will hold a Women’s Day Program during their morning worship service at 11:30a June 11. The program is entitled “Express Yourself Through the Word of God” and will include speakers Sis. Comeaka James  of Rock Springs Outreach Missions Church in Plain Dealing, La., and Sis. Marlynda Ware of Egypt Hill Baptist Church, Plain Dealing.

The church is located at 3605 MCR 1149 with Elder Joseph R. James as pastor.

Farmers Market

The Mims Community Center 12728 Fm 729 north side of Lake O the Pines, is holding a farmers market every Saturday from 10am to 2pm through July 8th for the Spring Growing Season and then will reopen for early fall season.
