Staff Reports

Seeing a sailboat is common on lakes like Ray Hubbard, but they also make appearances in Marion County’s Lake O’the Pines thanks to the Longview Yacht Club which has been sailing her waters  for over 50 years.

And the organization has set sail for another 50 or more years with the May 20 grand opening of their newly rebuilt docks.

Members spent the last two years taking apart, refurbishing, re-floating, and installing the upgraded docks, spending more than 2,000 hours and 20,000 pounds of steel to make something that will last and be accessible at all lake levels.

The new docks are fully floating and will rise or lower with lake levels. They feature weatherproof upgraded electrical connections and fresh water hookups. The decks are also made out of composite boards to better survive the changing Texas weather.

Over 100 people – both members and sailing fans – attended the grand opening and ribbon cutting.

The group is hoping to help with the creation of a Sea Scouts troup, as are always welcoming new members. Different members offer sailing, swimming or boating lessons.

The club is located near Big Cypress Marina. For more information, see their website at LongviewYachtClub.org
