JISD School Board made a minor adjustment to the 2023-24 school year calendar to accommodate just released State EOC Testing dates during their regular meeting on Tuesday.

Maintenance and custodial staff employees of the district will also get an adjusted work calendar following a change allowing them to have six additional paid holidays, bringing them to a 254 day work calendar. The change affects 22 employees district wide.

Ensuring various campus improvements are ready to go at the start of the school year in August was addressed by Clint Coyne.

Coyne said a number of large projects, like the junior high kitchen and junior high and elementary multi-purpose gym floors were on track to be completed by the end of the month.

Other projects, like the Security Film, Silent Panic Alarm Technology are also on track to be completed during the fall semester. The replacement for the elementary school cafeteria handicap lift will also be installed in September.

Coyne indicated while the recent storm damaged some of the awnings at the junior high and elementary schools, all had been repaired. An additional 36 feet of awning was added to the fourth grade building to go out past the gate to the teachers parking lot. Coyne said during rain, teachers were getting caught in the weather as the locked gate was not covered.

The tennis courts at the high school have been converted to a formal band practice area following the instalation of a sidewalk, and the removal of fencing.

Chief Financial Officer Mike Wood breifely discussed the budget issues facing the district this year, but that it was still too early to determine revenue and expense numbers.

The district is facing a potential $976,000 shortfall due to a dispute with the Texas Comptroller’s Office over appraisal values.

Wood said he hoped to have better numbers in the next few weeks.
