Council to meet Tuesday, set effective date for water rate increase

City of Jefferson

The Jefferson City Council will meet in special session at 6:30p Tuesday to consider approving the ordinance establishing the new water rates and setting when they will go into effect.

According to Jefferson Mayor Rob Baker, the City is required to provide 90 days notice before the rates can go into effect, which would be February 1, 2024. However, water meters are read on about the 15th of each month, so Council will consider setting February 15 as the effective date to make billing simpler. This means the $2.50 increase will not appear on customer bills until the March 2024 statements.

Council will also receive an update on the City attorney. Attorney Mike Martin has been the City attorney for the last decade, but took a medical leave of absence this month. Council approved hiring Upshur County ADA Barry Wallace as interim City attorney during Martin’s absence.

The Jimplecute will be live for the meeting.
