Music making its way into town

This fall kicks off a series of musical events in Jefferson that is sure to entertain and delight one and all. 

The season started with Steven Lu and members of the Marshall Symphony Orchestra thrilled a full house audience at Jefferson’s Cumberland Presbyterian Church last Sunday afternoon by performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35.

Seventeen year old violinist Steven Lu, is the grand prize winner of the 2023 Juanita Miller Competition, the first prize winner of the Collin County Young Artists Competition and the 2022 second prize winner of the Lynn Harrell Competition.  Steven is currently a Junior at Plano, Texas, High School.

The Friends of the Arts – Jefferson sponsored this event and has a more scheduled in December including:

  • • Marshall Symphony Brass Quintet, performing at Christ Episcopal Church.  This intimate concert is sure to entertain with many, delightfully interpreted holiday favorites at 7p December 2.
  • • Maestro Kermit Poling, Music Director and Conductor of the Marshall and other regional symphonies, violinist and composer in duets with  Charles Gilbert, Marshall Symphony staff keyboard artist and local church pianist/organist will perform a delightful selection of Christmas favorites at 7p December 16 at Cumberland Presbyterian Church. 

These free concerts are underwritten by the generous supporters of Friends of the Arts – Jefferson, a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization. For information about upcoming free concerts, see the Friends of the Arts – Jefferson Facebook page. They have events scheduled for February and April as well.

Other upcoming music events include 

  • • King States band will be at Union Baptist Church at 6:30p Nov. 30, $10 ticket
  • • Polin, and Gilbert, will perform a delightful selection of Christmas favorites at 6p December 23 at Cumberland Presbyterian Church, free 
  • • Other Candlelight music events have yet to be announced.
