‘The Teacher’ dedication set

Staff Reports

Three new additions have arrived at the Port Jefferson History and Nature Center. On the northwest corner of the park, a bronze “mama” bear and her two cubs are the newest residents and attraction to the park. Commissioned by Today Foundation President Richard H. Collins, “The Teacher” has special meaning to him and his family.

“Kathie Cox is an outstanding sculptor, creating lifelike masterpieces of native animals to Texas, Colorado, and beyond,” Collins said. “But even more so, she happens to be the wife of my oldest friend, Edwin L. Cox Jr. So, we talked about the idea of creating an educational sculpture that would draw visitors young and old. And, we can all laugh that one of the cubs, appropriately named ‘Dick’ and ‘Ed’, is not paying attention. It’s up to the beholder to guess which one is not!”

“The Teacher” features east Texas honey bears and will officially be dedicated at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 27 at the Port Jefferson History and Nature Center, 500 E. Broadway Street. Speakers will include United States Representative Nathaniel Moran, Richard H. Collins, and Kathie Cox.
