In early 2023, the Marion County Health and Resource Coalition emerged as a beacon of hope, responding to the pressing need for accessible healthcare in the county. The coalition has achieved remarkable progress in less than a year. Will Thomas and Peg Brown-Walker went over the coalition’s mission, membership, current initiatives, and future plans, shed light on their efforts to bring healthcare access to Marion County.

The Marion County Health and Resource Coalition’s mission is clear: to simplify the process of obtaining healthcare and other essential resources for Marion County residents. Identified as one of the counties in dire need by the Health and Human Services, the coalition’s primary goals are centered around addressing ongoing healthcare needs, transportation challenges, and communication gaps.

Comprising various community members, health resource organizations, and educational agencies, the coalition encourages public involvement to support its mission. The inclusivity of the membership ensures a diverse range of perspectives and insights, fostering a collaborative approach to problem-solving. By inviting the public to join, the coalition aims to create a united front in bringing healthcare and resources to Marion County.

Securing the building at 510 E. Bonham St., Jefferson, Texas, serves as a pivotal step for the coalition. The current location will act as a hub for resources and community engagement, providing a centralized space to address the identified needs. The coalition’s future plans involve obtaining 501(c)3 status to qualify for grants, enabling them to maximize the building’s potential in aiding Marion County citizens.

Through extensive community assessment, the coalition has pinpointed ongoing healthcare, transportation, and communication as the critical needs of Marion County residents. Lack of public transportation, internet availability, healthcare providers, and pharmacies have created isolated pockets of vulnerability within the community. The coalition is committed to seeking appropriate resources to bridge these gaps and uplift the citizens in greatest need.

Recognizing the challenges residents face in accessing healthcare, the coalition has collaborated with various partners, including the Texas AgriLife Extension, Texas Department of State Health Services, Community HealthCore, Texas Farm Bureau, Special Health Resources, and Community Services of Northeast Texas. By consolidating health resources in one accessible spot, the coalition aims to streamline the process of obtaining necessary care for Marion County residents. Tackling head on the difficulty of getting to pharmacies, doctor’s offices, and healthcare facilities.

Will Thomas recognized the need for action and formed a board, adopting a democratic approach to decision-making. The board discusses what needs to happen and strategies on how to make it a reality. By setting clear goals and fostering collaboration, the coalition has made significant strides in a short period.

Understanding the importance of financial sustainability, the coalition is taking measured steps towards 501(c)3 status. While still in the process of applying for grants, they are working towards fundraising initiatives in the next 3-6 months. This strategic approach aims to ensure the coalition’s long-term success without burdening the county financially.

Highlighting their commitment to community engagement, the coalition is organizing a health fair on March 2nd at MIMS VFD/ EMS from 10:00am to 1:00pm at 729 Avinger, TX 7530. This event will offer essential services such as vaccinations, vision screenings, BMI assessments, and health assessments with doctors on site. Additionally, an open invitation has been extended to like-minded individuals on February 12th at 501 E Bonham, Jefferson, TX 75657, encouraging more community members to join the coalition in their noble mission.

In a relatively short period, the Marion County Health and Resource Coalition has become a catalyst for positive change in the community. By addressing identified needs, consolidating resources, and fostering a collaborative and democratic approach, the coalition is on a path towards transforming Marion County’s healthcare landscape. The journey, though challenging, is a testament to the resilience and dedication of the coalition members, offering hope and inspiration to communities facing similar healthcare challenges across the nation.
