The Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club proudly extends a warm invitation to all to join them for the 77th Historic Jefferson Pilgrimage, themed “The Heart of East Texas,” this weekend.

As Jefferson gracefully reclines along the banks of the Big Cypress Bayou, embellished with meticulously restored historic homes and buildings, the anticipation of a weekend brimming with enchantment and allure is palpable.

Paula Rogers, chairperson of the Craft Fair committee, is a testament to the enduring spirit that infuses Pilgrimage with its unique charm.

“The Craft Fair has been a part of Pilgrimage for many years,” Paula said. “It provides something for everyone, offering handmade and homemade crafts and goods that showcase the creativity of our artisans.”

For Rogers, Pilgrimage is more than just a weekend event; it’s a tapestry woven with memories of camaraderie and shared passion. “I have enjoyed working with our current committee for three years,” Paula reflects.

“Each committee has a vision for what they can do to provide the best experience possible for our guests. I love the spirit of teamwork and the genuine commitment to bring the best event possible to our city,” she said.

India Standberry, orchestrator of the salad luncheon at the Grand Ballroom and Courtyard of the Excelsior House, says the luncheon embodies culinary delights and community spirit that define Pilgrimage.

“I love to cook and feed people,” Standberry said. “Volunteering for the garden club’s dinners and food events is a great way to connect with fellow members and the community.”

Standberry’s dedication to the luncheon extends beyond culinary prowess; it reflects a deep-seated commitment to preserving the essence of Pilgrimage for future generations.

“Pilgrimage really is a fun community event,” she shares. “It’s special to see generations come together to participate in something that has been a cherished tradition for so many years.”

Stacy Mills and Marianne Jones, co-chairs of the Plant Sale committee, share a passion for gardening that blossoms anew each Pilgrimage weekend.

“We seek out perennials, pollinators, and heirloom plants that thrive in our climate,” Mills explains. “It’s rewarding to see people return year after year to add to their gardens and engage in conversations about plants.” For Jones, whose roots in Jefferson run deep, Pilgrimage is a celebration of heritage and community.

“Having been involved with the Diamond Bessie play since childhood, Pilgrimage is a cherished tradition for us,” Jones said. “It’s a testament to our community’s resilience and commitment to preserving our heritage.”

Sharon Murray, chair of the Quilt Show at Cumberland Presbyterian Church, draws inspiration from her family’s quilting legacy.

“Quilts are like pieces of time, reflecting the stories and memories of those who crafted them,” Murray said. “The Quilt Show is a celebration of our town’s heritage and the dedication of those who work tirelessly to make Pilgrimage a success.”

For Murray, Pilgrimage is not only about showcasing the town’s beauty but also about preserving its history and fostering a sense of community pride.

“What I enjoy most about Pilgrimage is seeing the adults and children’s faces when they see and learn about this quaint town,” she said. “And the dedication of all the people who work to put it on every year!”

Bobbie Hardy, director of the Diamond Bessie Murder Trial, marvels at the enduring popularity of the annual production.

“Witnessing the success of the play each year fills me with joy,” Hardy said. “It’s a testament to the enduring charm of Jefferson and the dedication of all involved in making Pilgrimage a truly unforgettable experience.”

As the 77th Historic Jefferson Pilgrimage begins, the spirit of camaraderie and community pride permeates the air. From the vibrant Craft Fair to the botanical wonders of the Plant Sale, from the culinary delights of the salad luncheon to the timeless tradition of the Diamond Bessie Murder Trial, each aspect of the event reflects the passion and dedication of those who call Jefferson home.

Join the Garden Club as they celebrate the Heart of East Texas and embark on a journey through history, hospitality, and hope. In Jefferson, where the past meets the present with open arms, Pilgrimage is more than just an event; it’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of a community bound together by tradition and love.
