TPWD funds to repair trails, boardwalk

City of Jefferson

V. Hugh Lewis II/Jefferson Jimplecute

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department approved more than $4.5 million in grants across the state of which Jefferson will receive $300,000 to renovate and repair the 1.2 miles of trails and boardwalk in the Port Jefferson History and Nature Park in downtown.

The City first applied for, and received, the grant last year, however a clerical error on the application caused the City to decline and re-apply. The error had switched the amount of funds the City would be providing with the amount requested from TPWD.

The grant will replace the decomposed granite along the trails and do needed repairs to the raised boardwalks.

This is in addition to the trail repair approved at the last City Council meeting.

The National Recreational Trails Fund (NRTF) supports recreational trail construction, renovation and acquisition through grants funded from a portion of the federal gas tax generated by fuel purchases for off-highway vehicles. The fund must be used to support a diverse mix of both motorized and non-motorized trail projects, and the Texas Legislature has added $1 million per year to the program, partially from the Sporting Goods Sales Tax.
