The Bulldogs know how to start a season off right.
In last week’s season opener, playing in Melissa, Texas, the Dawgs blanked Leonard 41-0. Leonard finished last season with a 6-5 record overall, and 2-3 in district play and Jefferson was 7-3 overall and 4-1 in district.
Jefferson jumped off to an early lead following a 5-yard rushing touchdown by Kamran Williams, then retained possession following a fumble by Leonard. The Dawgs finished off the first quarter with a touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion, making the score 16-0.
The Dawgs then started the second quarter with another rushing touchdown, making the score 22-0. Jefferson followed up with a fumble recovery and then completed a rushing touchdown, bringing the score 28-0 following a missed PAT. Jefferson continued the rushing pattern bringing the score to 34-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Jefferson made a quick pass completion and completed PAT to bring the score 41-0 with 9-minutes still to go in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs (1-0) will now prepare for their match against Newton (Newton, TX). The Eagles come into the non-league match with a 0-1 record. In their last match, Newton was routed by West Orange-Stark (Orange, TX), 30-8, in a non-league match.
Before the game, the Bulldogs took time to honor former Coach Jerry Bennett with a team-signed helmet. Bennett led the Dawgs to their 1986 State Championships, and is frequently found on the sidelines cheering on the team.
