Jefferson ISD was the big winner from this October’s Brian Sowards Legacy Crappie Tournament at Lake O’the Pines, landing $31,200.76 for JISD scholarships.

Event coordinator Cassandra Gann presented the check to JISD Superintendent Michael Walker during Tuesday’s Commissioners Court meeting.

“When you hear about these donations from events, you expect $2-3,000,” said Walker during Tuesday night’s school board meeting. “This was beyond anything I was expecting.”

Gann told Commissioners the event brought 197 anglers, along with their families, who spent $111,164 in the County during their stay, based on reports from 115 participants.

The County helped sponsor the event with a donation of $15,000.

Shelia Patterson, event sponsor, also announced the return of the Patterson Pest Patrol Crappie Throw Down tournament next October. She said the event will continue to  include activities for Jefferson residents, including the free community fish fry. She said more details will be coming soon.

Commissioners also approved a resolution supporting  the Texans Feeding Texans 2025 grant program, at a cost of $889.50. The grant is administered by the Texas Dept of Agriculture through Senior Citizens Services of Texarkana which provides home-delivered meals to residents.
