Last week, Jefferson ISD hosted an archery clinic featuring both High School and Junior High divisions. The event, which utilized the Lockett Education Center gym, provided ample space for students to practice and compete while offering comfortable spectator seating for families and community members.
“The primary gym space is a tremendous enhancement to a program that was launched just last year at the Junior High,” archery insructor Paul Cothren said. “Superintendent Walker, the school board, Dr. Phillips, and Dr. Phy have been instrumental in supporting our efforts as we expand into this exciting new discipline. “
Archery is a safe, universally adaptable sport that enhances behavior, boosts self-esteem, and inspires motivation in participants of all ability levels, according to Cothren.
“While we fully support and encourage our traditional athletic programs, archery is helping us connect with a broader range of students — including those not typically involved in sports, as well as those who already are,” he said.
Thanks to the partnership between the National Archery in School Program, (NASP), and the International Bowhunting Organization, (I.B.O.), students now have another shooting opportunity. A new 3-D format adopts a more realistic shooting style and presents a greater challenge for students. During the clinic, students gained the skills necessary to compete in both areas.
“Once school begins, we’ll start training for the upcoming season, which runs through May 2026,” Cothren said. “Practices will be held weekly as each archer competes for a spot on the traveling team, which consists of 12 members each. Competitions take place at the area, region, state, national, and even world levels. High school students have the opportunity to compete for scholarships.”
All students in grades 7-12 are eligible to join archery for the upcoming season. Enrollment forms are available at meet the teacher or by email request to pmcothren@jeffersonisd.org.
